WIRE is committed to transparency in every aspect of funding our organization. We recognize that accepting financial support brings the potential for real or perceived conflicts of interest, both for nonprofit outlets like WIRE, which rely on donor and foundation support, or for for-profits, which rely on advertisers and investors. That is why WIRE:
- Makes public all donors who give $5,000 or more per year.
- Cedes no right to assign, edit, or review our content to anyone outside of our editorial team
- Avoids accepting charitable donations from government entities, political parties, elected officials, and candidates seeking public office
- Does not accept donations that could compromise our editorial independence or create conflict of interest
- Considers donations to support the coverage of particular topics but maintains a firewall between the donor and the editorial process
- Accepts anonymous donations only if sufficient safeguards have been put into place that the expenditure of that donation is made independently by our organization
- Ensures that anonymous donors do not make up more than 5 percent of our revenue
- Discloses and explains relationships with major donors and stakeholders whenever they appear in our stories
In all cases, editorial decisionmaking and content are under the sole control of WIRE. See WIRE’s list of supporters here.
